New Delhi, June 6, 2024 – The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has released the third advance estimate for foodgrain production in India for the year 2023–24. The total foodgrain production is estimated to be 328.85 million tonnes, slightly lower than the previous year’s production of 329.69 million tonnes.

Despite the slight decline, the current year’s production is significantly higher than the average production over the past five years (2018-19 to 2022-23), which stood at 307.75 million tonnes.

Breakdown of Estimates:
Rice: Production is estimated at 136.70 million tonnes, an increase of 0.95 million tonnes from the previous year.
Wheat: Production is expected to be 112.93 million tonnes, up by 2.37 million tonnes from last year.
Millets (Shree Anna): Estimated at 17.41 million tonnes, a slight increase of 0.87 million tonnes from 2022-23.
Nutri/Coarse Cereals: Production is projected at 54.73 million tonnes, up by 4.62 million tonnes from the average production over the past five years.
The estimates have been prepared based on data from State Agricultural Statistics Authorities (SASAs), validated with information from remote sensing, weekly crop weather watch groups, and other agencies. Factors such as climatic conditions, previous trends, price movements, and mandi arrivals were also considered.

This year’s estimates include production data from the kharif, rabi, and summer seasons, reflecting a comprehensive approach in assessing agricultural output.
